Baek Ji-hoon (Korean: 백지훈; born February 28, 1985) is a South Korean former professional footballer who played as a defensive or central midfielder. Known for his technical ability, passing range, and stamina, he was a prominent figure in South Korean football during the 2000s and early 2010s. He represented the South Korea national team at the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Club Career
Baek Ji-hoon began his professional career with Chunnam Dragons in 2003, quickly establishing himself as a promising talent in the K League.
In 2005, he moved to FC Seoul, where his performances continued to impress. His time at FC Seoul further cemented his reputation as one of the league's most exciting young midfielders.
The peak of his club career arguably came with Suwon Samsung Bluewings, which he joined in 2006. With Suwon, he won the K League title in 2008, a significant achievement. He spent several successful seasons with the club, becoming a key player in their midfield.
Later in his career, he had stints with other clubs, including Sangju Sangmu (during his mandatory military service), Ulsan Hyundai, and Incheon United. He also had a brief spell in China with Guangzhou R&F in 2013, on loan from Suwon.
He retired from professional football in 2017 after a spell with Seoul E-Land FC.
International Career
Baek Ji-hoon represented South Korea at various youth levels before making his senior international debut.
He was a key member of the South Korea U-20 national team and later the U-23 Olympic team. He participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where South Korea exited in the group stage.
His senior national team debut came in 2005. He earned a place in the South Korean squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany, under then-coach Dick Advocaat. Although he did not feature extensively in the tournament, his inclusion marked a significant milestone in his career. He accumulated a total of 15 caps for the senior national team between 2005 and 2008.
Style of Play
Baek Ji-hoon was primarily known for his intelligent play as a central midfielder. He possessed excellent vision, a wide range of passing, and the ability to control the tempo of a game. His defensive contributions, including his work rate and tackling, also made him a well-rounded player capable of operating as a box-to-box midfielder or a deep-lying playmaker.
