Badawi al-Jabal (1900–1981) was the pseudonym of Muhammad Sulayman al-Ahmed, a prominent Syrian poet and political figure. He is recognized as one of the leading representatives of neoclassical Arabic poetry in the 20th century.
Biographical Overview Born in the village of al-Dafihiya, near Latakia, al-Ahmed was raised in a scholarly family. He received a traditional education in Arabic language, literature, and Islamic jurisprudence. The name "Badawi al-Jabal," which translates to "Bedouin of the Mountain," was given to him in the early 1920s by Yusuf al-Isa, the owner of Alef Ba newspaper, to distinguish his rural, mountainous origins.
Literary Contribution His poetic style is characterized by its adherence to classical Arabic forms, specifically the qasida. His work is noted for its linguistic complexity and the use of traditional meters and rhymes. He served in several ministerial capacities, including Minister of Education and Minister of Health, during the 1950s. His political stances and critiques of various administrations resulted in several periods of imprisonment and long intervals of exile in Lebanon, Turkey, and Switzerland.
