Bachar Houli (born 12 May 1990) is a former professional Australian rules footballer who played for the Essendon Football Club (2007–2010) and the Richmond Football Club (2011–2023) in the Australian Football League (AFL). Regarded as one of the most prominent Muslim athletes in Australian sport, Houli is noted for his on‑field versatility, community advocacy, and leadership within the game.
Early life and education
Houli was born in Melbourne, Victoria, to Lebanese‑Australian parents who emigrated from Lebanon during the civil war. He grew up in the suburb of Glen Waverley and attended Glen Waverley Secondary College, where he began playing Australian rules football. Houli also participated in soccer and cricket during his youth. He was recruited from the Oakleigh Chargers in the TAC Cup, a key pathway competition for AFL prospects.
AFL career
Essendon (2007–2010)
Houli was selected by Essendon with pick No. 42 in the 2007 AFL National Draft. He made his senior debut in Round 6 of the 2007 season against the West Coast Eagles. Over four seasons with Essendon, Houli played 44 games and kicked 9 goals. He received an AFL Rising Star nomination in Round 4 of the 2009 season.
Richmond (2011–2023)
At the conclusion of the 2010 season, Houli was traded to Richmond in exchange for a second‑round draft pick. He debuted for Richmond in Round 2 of the 2011 season and quickly established himself as a reliable midfielder and half‑back flanker. Over his 13 seasons with the Tigers, he played 215 games and kicked 62 goals.
Houli contributed to Richmond’s premiership victories in 2017, 2019, and 2020, becoming the first Muslim player to win an AFL premiership. He served as a senior leadership group member and was appointed vice‑captain for the 2020 season. In 2022, Houli announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2023 season, concluding a 17‑year AFL career with a total of 259 senior games.
