Babno Polje

Babno Polje is a small settlement in the Municipality of Ilirska Bistrica, situated in the Inner Carniola region of southwestern Slovenia. It lies at an elevation of approximately 761 meters (2,497 ft) above sea level in the foothills of the Snežnik Plateau, near the border with Croatia.

Geography
The settlement is composed of scattered hamlets and farms, covering an area of roughly 5.87 km² (2.27 sq mi). It is positioned at latitude 45°38′N and longitude 14°27′E. The surrounding landscape is characterized by karst terrain, mixed forests, and pastureland.

Demographics
According to the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, Bab no Polje had a population of 131 inhabitants in the 2002 census. More recent population figures are not readily available, but the settlement remains sparsely populated, with a low population density typical of rural Inner Carniola.

History
Babno Polje has historically been part of the traditional region of Inner Carniola (Slovene: Notranjska). Throughout the Habsburg Monarchy, it was incorporated into the Duchy of Carniola. After World War II, the settlement became part of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia within Yugoslavia, and since 1991 it has been part of the independent Republic of Slovenia.

Economy and Land Use
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, forestry, and modest livestock farming. The settlement’s remote location and limited infrastructure have constrained industrial development, maintaining its predominantly agrarian character.

Climate
Babno Polje experiences a continental‑mediterranean climate with cold winters and warm summers. Due to its elevation and inland position, it is among the colder locales in Slovenia. Recorded temperature extremes include a minimum of –24 °C (–11 °F) observed during the winter of 2005, which is noteworthy within the regional climatological records.

Cultural and Natural Landmarks
The settlement contains a small chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross, dating from the late 19th century, which serves as a local religious site. The surrounding natural environment offers opportunities for hiking and nature observation, particularly within the nearby Snežnik Forest Park.

Transportation
Babno Polje is accessible via local road networks connecting it to the municipal centre of Ilirska Bistrica (approximately 15 km to the northwest) and to neighboring villages. Public transport services are limited, with most residents relying on private vehicles.

Administrative Status
As part of the Municipality of Ilirska Bistrica, Babno Polje falls under the jurisdiction of the Littoral–Inner Carniola statistical region. Local governance is administered by the municipal council based in Ilirska Bistrica.
