BSG Stahl Brandenburg was an East German sports club based in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel. As a Betriebssportgemeinschaft (Company Sports Community), it was sponsored by the local steel and rolling mill, the VEB Stahl- und Walzwerk Brandenburg. While the club maintained departments for various sports, it was most recognized for its association football team.
The football department achieved its greatest prominence during the 1980s. After several decades of competing in the lower divisions of the East German league system, the club earned promotion to the DDR-Oberliga, the country's top-tier division, for the 1984–85 season. BSG Stahl Brandenburg remained in the top flight until the dissolution of the East German league system following German reunification.
The club's most significant achievement occurred during the 1985–86 season, when it finished fifth in the DDR-Oberliga. This ranking allowed the team to qualify for the 1986–87 UEFA Cup. In the first round of the international tournament, they defeated the Northern Irish side Coleraine FC. In the second round, they were eliminated by the Swedish club IFK Göteborg, who went on to win the competition that year.
Following the economic and political changes in 1990, the club was reorganized to comply with West German legal standards. It was renamed BSV Stahl Brandenburg and later underwent further structural changes, eventually leading to the formation of the contemporary club FC Stahl Brandenburg. The club's home matches were traditionally played at the Stahl-Stadion (now known as the Stadion am Quenz).
