B. J. C. Perera (full name: Bonaventure Jayasiri Crispus Perera) is a Sri Lankan pediatrician, medical academic, and editor. He was born in Wadduwa, Sri Lanka on 14 July 1947.
Education
Perera completed his primary education at De Mazenod College, Kandana, and secondary education at St. Peter's College, Colombo. He enrolled at the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo in 1965 and qualified with an MBBS (Ceylon) degree with second-class honors in 1970. He subsequently pursued postgraduate education in Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom, earning qualifications including DCH (Ceylon), DCH (England), MRCP (UK), MD (Paediatrics), FRCP (Edinburgh), FRCP (London), FRCPCH (UK), FSLCPaed, FCCP, and FCGP (SL).
Career
Perera is a specialist consultant pediatrician with a particular focus on childhood respiratory diseases. He has held clinical positions at Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo and Asiri Medical Hospital, Colombo. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo.
He served as the first President of the Sri Lanka College of Paediatricians. He was also the founding president of the Respiratory Diseases Study Group of Sri Lanka, founding president of the Childhood Respiratory Study Circle of Sri Lanka, National Consultant for the Programme for Control of Acute Respiratory Infections of the Ministry of Health, Chairman of the Board of Study in Paediatrics at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, and a founding member of the Board of Study in Sports Medicine at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine. He has been a member of the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM).
He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Sri Lanka Journal of Bio-Medical Informatics.
Publications
Perera is the author of the book Modern Child Health Care: A Guide to Parents and has contributed to numerous research publications in pediatric medicine.
Awards
He received the "Outstanding Paediatrician of Asia" award from the Asia Pacific Paediatric Association in 2007.
Personal life
Perera married Dr. Sarojini Perera in 1975. They reside in Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka, and have one daughter and three grandchildren.
