Bärenstein is a municipality (Gemeinde) in the district of Sächsische Schweiz‑Osterzgebirge, in the Free State of Saxony, Germany. It is situated in the Eastern Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge) approximately 30 kilometres southeast of Dresden.

History
Bärenstein’s origins trace back to the medieval period. The settlement is first mentioned in historical records in the 13th century, when the region was part of the Margraviate of Meissen. A fortified structure, later known as Bärenstein Castle, was erected on a rocky outcrop overlooking the settlement; the castle gave the village its name (German Bär “bear” + Stein “rock”).
During the early modern era the locality belonged to the Saxon duchy and later the Kingdom of Saxony. The economy traditionally centred on forestry, small‑scale mining, and later on textile and craft industries. Following German reunification in 1990, Bärenstein, like many rural communities in the Ore Mountains, experienced demographic decline and a shift toward tourism and service sectors.
Administration
Bärenstein is incorporated into the administrative community (Verwaltungsgemeinschaft) of Thum. The mayor (Bürgermeister) as of the latest electoral term (2022‑2029) is elected for a seven‑year period, in accordance with Saxon municipal law.
Culture and Sightseeing
- Bärenstein Castle Ruins: Remnants of the medieval fortification are situated on the hill above the village and are accessible via marked walking trails.
- St. John’s Church (Johanniskirche): A Protestant parish church dating from the 16th century, featuring late Gothic architectural elements.
- Annual Bear Festival (Bärenfest): A local cultural event held each summer, celebrating traditional crafts, music, and regional cuisine.
Transportation
The municipality is connected by local roads to the B173 federal highway, providing access to the larger towns of Dippoldiswalde and Thum. The nearest railway station is located in Dippoldiswalde, on the Dresden–Dresden‑Sächsische Schweiz line.
