The band is associated with the melodic power metal genre, characterized by fast tempos, prominent keyboard arrangements, and clean, melodic vocals.
The group’s recording career began with their debut studio album, Perpetual Twilight, released in 2002 through Arise Records. This was followed by Far From Heaven (2003) and The Inquisition (2005). Throughout its history, the band has undergone several lineup changes, though founding member Magnus Winterwild has remained the primary vocalist and a central figure in the group's songwriting.
Axenstar's discography expanded further with releases such as Final Adventure (2006), Aftermath (2011), Where Dreams Are Forgotten (2014), and End of All Hope (2019). Their musical style often incorporates neoclassical influences and traditional heavy metal elements. Lyrical themes typically focus on fantasy, personal struggles, and historical or mythological narratives.
