Avraham Gorali

Avraham Gorali (Hebrew: אברהם גורלי; 1913/1914 – 1989) was a prominent Israeli legal figure, best known for being the first Military Advocate General of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) from 1948 to 1953. His work was instrumental in establishing the legal framework and military justice system for the nascent State of Israel.

Early Life and Education Born in Russia in 1913 or 1914, Gorali immigrated to Palestine, then under British Mandate, in 1925. He pursued legal studies in Jerusalem, eventually qualifying as a lawyer.

Military Service and Legal Career

  • British Army: During World War II, Gorali served in the British Army, gaining valuable experience in military law and administration.
  • Haganah: Prior to Israel's independence, he joined the legal department of the Haganah, the pre-state Jewish paramilitary organization, where he contributed to developing legal structures for the future military.
  • Military Advocate General (1948-1953): With the establishment of the State of Israel in 1948, Avraham Gorali was appointed as the first Military Advocate General of the IDF. In this critical role, he was tasked with building the entire military justice system from scratch during the War of Independence and its immediate aftermath. His responsibilities included:
    • Formulating the IDF's military law code.
    • Establishing military courts.
    • Setting up the prosecution and defense systems within the military.
    • Providing legal counsel to the military leadership. His foundational work laid the groundwork for the professional and independent military justice system that continues to operate in Israel today.
  • Military Court of Appeals: Following his tenure as Military Advocate General, Gorali continued to serve the military legal system as a judge on the Military Court of Appeals, where he further shaped military jurisprudence.

Legacy Avraham Gorali is remembered as a foundational figure in Israeli military law.
