Avonmore is a small rural locality in the City of Greater Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. At the 2021 Australian census, Avonmore had a population of 42.

Geography

Avonmore is situated approximately 170 km north-west of Melbourne and about 20 km north of the Bendigo city centre. It lies at coordinates 36°32′6″S 144°31′50″E and covers an area of approximately 70.6 square kilometres. The landscape is typical of rural Victoria, characterised by broad agricultural land and sparse settlement patterns. Its postcode is 3559.

Etymology

The locality was originally called "South Elmore," but local residents found this name unsuitable due to its similarity to the nearby town of Elmore. In 1910, residents of South Elmore held a meeting to choose a new name. A farmer suggested the name "Avon," which was agreed upon with the addition of the second syllable of "more," forming "Avonmore."

Avonmore falls within the City of Greater Bendigo local government area. At the state level, it is part of the electoral district of Bendigo East, and at the federal level, it lies within the Division of Bendigo.
