Austramathes purpurea

Taxonomy

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Arthropoda
  • Class: Insecta
  • Order: Lepidoptera
  • Family: Noctuidae
  • Subfamily: Noctuinae (classification may vary among sources)
  • Genus: Austramathes Meyrick, 1883
  • Species: Austramathes purpurea (Meyrick, 1914)

Description
Austramathes purpurea is a noctuid moth whose adult forewings exhibit a distinctive purplish hue, from which the specific epithet “purpurea” is derived. The wingspan of the species is reported to be approximately 30–35 mm, though precise measurements vary among specimens. The forewings display subtle patterning of darker transverse lines and a faint discal spot, while the hindwings are generally lighter in colour.

Distribution and Habitat
The species is known from New Zealand and is considered endemic to that region. Records indicate its presence primarily in native forest habitats, ranging from lowland to montane zones. Observations have been documented on both the North and South Islands, though the exact range limits remain incompletely mapped.

Biology and Ecology
Larval host plants for A. purpurea have not been definitively recorded; however, members of the genus Austramathes are generally associated with woody dicotyledonous plants. Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to light, a behaviour typical of many noctuid moths. Flight periods are reported to occur during the austral spring and summer months (approximately September to February), but comprehensive phenological data are lacking.

Conservation Status
There is presently no assessment of Austramathes purpurea on the New Zealand Threat Classification System or the IUCN Red List. The paucity of detailed population studies means the conservation status of the species is currently uncertain.

Research and Documentation
The species was first described by Edward Meyrick in 1914 in his work on New Zealand micro‑lepidoptera. Subsequent references to A. purpurea appear in taxonomic catalogues such as Dugdale’s 1988 “Lepidoptera – annotated catalogue, and keys to family-group taxa” and the New Zealand Organisms Register (NZOR). Specimens are held in national collections, including the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa.

Notes

  • Taxonomic placement within Noctuidae has been relatively stable, but subfamily assignments may differ among recent systematic treatments.
  • Due to the limited ecological and distributional data available, many aspects of the species’ life history remain poorly understood.
