Auguste Georges Darzens

Auguste Georges Darzens (21 April 1867 – 8 March 1953) was a French organic chemist noted for his contributions to synthetic methodology, most prominently the eponymous Darzens reaction.

Early life and education
Born in Nîmes, France, Darzens pursued higher education at the École Normale Supérieure, where he completed his studies in chemistry. He earned his doctorate in 1896 with a dissertation focused on the chemistry of nitriles and related compounds.

Academic and professional career

  • University of Strasbourg (1904–1918): Darzens served as professor of organic chemistry, conducting research on halogenated compounds and their reactivity.
  • University of Paris (Sorbonne) (1919–1936): He held the chair of organic chemistry, supervising numerous doctoral students and expanding the department’s research program.
