Audie James Norris (born December 20, 1960) is an American former professional basketball player. Standing at 2.06 m (6 ft 9 in) and playing primarily at the power forward and center positions, Norris is best known for his dominant career in Spain, particularly with FC Barcelona, where he became one of the most iconic foreign players in the Liga ACB history.

Early Life and College Career

Norris was born in Jackson, Mississippi. He attended Jackson State University, where he played college basketball for the Jackson State Tigers. During his collegiate career, he established himself as a powerful interior player, known for his rebounding and scoring abilities.

NBA Career

Norris was selected by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 6th overall pick in the 1982 NBA draft. He played three seasons in the NBA, appearing for both the Trail Blazers (1982–1985) and briefly for the Milwaukee Bucks (1985). During his NBA tenure, he averaged 3.2 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. However, his NBA career was somewhat hampered by injuries, and he did not fully showcase the potential that led to his high draft selection.

European Career

Norris's career truly blossomed after he moved to Europe. In 1985, he signed with Spanish club FC Barcelona Bàsquet, where he would play for seven seasons (1985–1993). This period marked the most successful and celebrated phase of his professional life.

At FC Barcelona, Norris quickly became a cornerstone of the team. He was a dominant force in the paint, known for his incredible athleticism, powerful dunks, tenacious rebounding, and strong defensive presence. His energetic and combative playing style, combined with his leadership, earned him the nickname "El Perro Atómico" (The Atomic Dog) among fans.

During his time with Barcelona, Norris led the team to numerous domestic titles, including:

  • 3 Liga ACB championships: (1987, 1988, 1990)
  • 6 Copa del Rey titles: (1987, 1988, 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995) – Note: While the entry states his tenure as 1985-1993, some sources list his Copa del Rey wins with FC Barcelona up to 1995, implying a potential extended presence or a slight discrepancy in end date depending on specific records.
  • 1 FIBA Korać Cup: (1987)

Norris also played a pivotal role in Barcelona's repeated quests for the EuroLeague title, helping the team reach the EuroLeague Final Four multiple times (1989, 1990, 1991) and the EuroLeague Finals on several occasions, though they ultimately fell short of winning the continent's most prestigious club competition during his tenure.

After leaving FC Barcelona in 1993, he played briefly for other Spanish clubs, including Joventut Badalona.

Audie Norris was renowned for his imposing physical presence, explosive power, and unwavering commitment on the court. He was an elite rebounder and a consistent scorer from close range, often thrilling fans with his powerful dunks. His defensive intensity and ability to disrupt opponents' offenses were also key attributes.

Considered one of the greatest foreign players in the history of Spanish basketball, Norris left an indelible mark on FC Barcelona and the Liga ACB. He is celebrated as a club legend and a symbol of an era of great success for Barcelona basketball.
