Atherinosoma

Atherinosoma is a genus of small ray‑finned fishes belonging to the family Atherinidae, commonly referred to as silversides. Members of this genus are native to freshwater and estuarine habitats of Australia and, in some cases, surrounding regions such as New Zealand.

Taxonomic classification

  • Kingdom: Animalia
  • Phylum: Chordata
  • Class: Actinopterygii (ray‑finned fishes)
  • Order: Atheriniformes
  • Family: Atherinidae
  • Genus: Atherinosoma

General characteristics
Atherinosoma species are typically slender, silvery fishes ranging from 5 to 15 cm in total length. They possess a laterally compressed body, a small terminal mouth, and a single dorsal fin positioned midway along the back. Like other atherinids, they have a distinctive silvery lateral stripe and a forked caudal fin.

Habitat and distribution
Species within the genus inhabit a variety of shallow water environments, including streams, rivers, lagoons, and near‑coastal brackish zones. Their distribution is largely confined to the temperate regions of southeastern Australia, with some records extending to adjacent islands.

Ecology and behavior
Atherinosoma fishes are omnivorous, feeding on small invertebrates, planktonic crustaceans, and occasional algae. They are schooling species, forming loose aggregations that can be observed near the water surface. Reproduction is typically seasonal, with spawning occurring in the warmer months; eggs are usually deposited on submerged vegetation or substrates.

Conservation status
Most Atherinosoma species are not currently listed as threatened on a global scale, although local populations may be impacted by habitat degradation, water pollution, and the introduction of invasive species. Conservation assessments are generally conducted at the national or regional level.
