The history of Aste is closely intertwined with the strategic importance of Saaremaa, particularly during the 20th century. During the [[Soviet occupation of Estonia]] and the subsequent [[Cold War]], Aste gained particular significance due to the establishment of a large Soviet military airfield, known as Aste Airfield. This airbase was one of several crucial military installations on Saaremaa, designed to control access to the [[Baltic Sea]] and serve as a forward operating base for Soviet air defense and naval aviation. The construction and operation of the airfield brought a military presence and some development to the area around Aste. After Estonia regained independence in 1991, the Soviet forces withdrew, and the airfield was largely abandoned. Today, the extensive, now mostly disused, runways and remnants of various structures from the former airbase can still be observed in the vicinity of the village, serving as a tangible reminder of the Cold War era. The village itself has retained a more traditional rural character, with residential areas and agricultural land.
