Association Najdeh

Association Najdeh (Arabic: جمعية النجدة النسائية, romanized: Jamʻīyat an-Najdah an-Nisāʼīyah, literally "Women's Aid Association") is a Palestinian non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Lebanon. Established in 1976, it is dedicated to empowering Palestinian women and girls living in refugee camps and informal gatherings across Lebanon, promoting their social, economic, and political rights.

History

Association Najdeh was founded in 1976 by a group of Palestinian and Lebanese women in response to the deteriorating conditions faced by Palestinian women in refugee camps during the Lebanese Civil War. Initially, its efforts focused on providing emergency relief and immediate support to families affected by the conflict. Over the decades, its mandate evolved to address the systemic issues faced by Palestinian women, including marginalization, poverty, statelessness, and gender-based discrimination, through comprehensive, long-term development programs. The organization plays a crucial role in providing support and advocacy within a community that often faces significant legal and social restrictions in Lebanon.

Mission and Objectives

The core mission of Association Najdeh is to empower Palestinian women and youth in Lebanon to become active and productive members of their communities, advocating for their rights and improving their quality of life. Its key objectives include:

  • Enhancing women's economic independence through vocational training and livelihood support.
  • Promoting literacy and educational opportunities for women and girls.
  • Providing psychosocial support and legal assistance to victims of violence and those facing legal challenges.
  • Raising awareness about women's rights and advocating for policy changes that benefit Palestinian refugees.
  • Strengthening community resilience and leadership among women and youth.

Programs and Activities

Association Najdeh implements a wide range of programs structured around its strategic objectives, targeting Palestinian refugees in camps such as Shatila, Burj el-Barajneh, Nahr el-Bared, and Ein el-Hilweh, among others:

  • Vocational Training: Offers practical courses in various fields, including sewing, hairdressing, computer skills, and food processing, often leading to micro-enterprise development opportunities and job placement.
  • Literacy and Education: Conducts literacy classes for adult women and provides remedial education and academic support for children and youth to prevent school dropouts and improve educational outcomes.
  • Psychosocial Support (PSS): Operates counseling centers, provides individual and group therapy, and organizes awareness campaigns on mental health, gender-based violence (GBV), and child protection.
  • Legal Aid: Offers legal advice and representation, particularly in matters related to personal status, residency rights, and addressing gender-based violence.
  • Advocacy and Awareness: Organizes workshops, seminars, and campaigns to raise awareness about women's rights, child protection, and the specific challenges faced by Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. It also engages in advocacy efforts with local and international bodies.
  • Child Protection: Implements programs aimed at protecting children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation, supporting their overall well-being and development within the challenging environment of refugee camps.

  • Increased economic self-sufficiency among women through skills development and income generation, enabling them to support their families.
