Asmaca, Alanya

Asmaca is a neighbourhood (mahalle) in the district of Alanya, which is part of Antalya Province in southwestern Turkey. It is administratively governed by the Alanya Municipality and falls within the jurisdiction of the Alanya District Governorate.

Geography
Asmaca is situated inland from the Mediterranean coast, approximately 20 km east of the central town of Alanya. The neighbourhood lies at the foothills of the Taurus Mountains, with an elevation of roughly 250 metres above sea level. Its geographic coordinates are approximately 36°41′N 31°57′E.

Demographics
According to the Address‑Based Population Registration System (ADNKS) published by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) for 31 December 2022, Asmaca had a registered population of 1,726 residents.

Administrative Status
Prior to the 2013 Turkish administrative reform (Law No. 6360), Asmaca was classified as a village (köy). Following the reform, it was incorporated as a neighbourhood within the Alanya municipality.

Economy and Infrastructure
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with the cultivation of citrus fruits, olives, and vegetables. Small‑scale livestock farming is also common. The neighbourhood is connected to the district center of Alanya by provincial road D.400, which provides access to regional markets and services.

Etymology
The name “Asmaca” derives from the Turkish word asmaca, meaning “noose” or “hanging device.” The origin of this toponym in the local context is not documented in widely available scholarly sources.
