Asia Motors

Definition
Asia Motors Co., Ltd. was a South Korean automobile manufacturer that operated from 1977 until its merger with Kia Motors in 1999. The company produced a variety of passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and off‑road utility models.

Overview
Founded in 1977 and headquartered in Seoul, Asia Motors entered the South Korean automotive market during a period of rapid industrial expansion. The firm initially focused on assembling vehicles under license for other manufacturers, most notably producing the Kia Pride (originally a version of the Ford Escort) for Kia Motors. Throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, Asia Motors expanded its product line to include its own designs, such as the Rocsta, a rugged off‑road vehicle introduced in 1990, and the AM series of light commercial trucks.

In the late 1990s, amid the Asian financial crisis and a consolidation trend within the Korean auto industry, Kia Motors acquired a controlling interest in Asia Motors. In 1999 the company was formally integrated into Kia, becoming part of Kia’s bus and truck division, and the Asia Motors brand was discontinued.

Etymology/Origin
The corporate name combines “Asia,” referencing the continent and the company’s intended market scope, with “Motors,” a common suffix in automotive branding denoting vehicle manufacturing.
