Ashok Desai

Ashok H. Desai (18 December 1932 – 13 April 2020) was a distinguished Indian jurist and legal professional who served as the Attorney General for India from 1996 to 1998. Previously, he held the office of Solicitor General of India from 1989 to 1990.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1932, Desai pursued his legal education at Government Law College, Bombay, and later at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. He was called to the Bar in England in 1956 and subsequently enrolled as an advocate in India.

Career

Desai's legal career spanned over six decades, during which he became a prominent figure in India's legal landscape. He specialized in constitutional law, administrative law, and human rights. His tenure as Solicitor General and Attorney General saw him represent the Indian government in numerous significant cases before the Supreme Court of India and various high courts.

He was involved in several landmark cases, contributing significantly to the development of Indian jurisprudence. These included cases concerning fundamental rights, environmental protection, freedom of the press, and the right to information. Desai was known for his eloquent arguments and his commitment to upholding the rule of law and constitutional principles.

Awards and Recognition

In recognition of his exceptional contributions to public affairs and law, Ashok Desai was honored with the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian award, by the Government of India in 2001. He also received the Law Asia Human Rights Award in 1994 for his work in the field of human rights.

Later Life and Death

Even after his terms as a law officer, Desai continued to practice law and remained an influential voice in legal discourse. He passed away on 13 April 2020, at the age of 87.
