Ashley Walters (born June 30, 1982) is a British actor and rapper. He is widely recognized for his lead role as Dushane Hill in the crime drama series Top Boy and for his musical career under the stage name Asher D.
Early Life and Music Career Walters was born in Peckham, London. He began his career in the entertainment industry as a musician, gaining prominence in the early 2000s as a member of the UK garage and hip-hop collective So Solid Crew. The group was influential in the British urban music scene, achieving a number-one hit on the UK Singles Chart with "21 Seconds" in 2001. Walters also released several solo albums and mixtapes as Asher D.
Acting Career Walters’ acting career began in childhood with roles in television programs such as Grange Hill. He transitioned into film with a critically acclaimed performance in Bullet Boy (2004), for which he was named Best Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards.
In 2011, Walters began starring in Top Boy, a series that explores the lives of those involved in drug dealing and gang culture in London. The series originally aired on Channel 4 before being revived by Netflix in 2019, further increasing Walters' international profile. Other notable television credits include the police procedurals Cuffs and Bulletproof, the latter of which he co-created. His film credits include Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005), Speed Racer (2008), and Stormbreaker (2006).
Legal History In 2002, Walters was sentenced to 18 months in a young offender institution for possession of a loaded firearm. He has since been vocal about his experiences in the criminal justice system and has used his platform to advocate for youth mentorship and the prevention of crime.
