Definition
Ashley Kriel (1966 – 19 July 1987) was a South African anti‑apartheid activist who became a notable figure in the youth resistance against the apartheid regime. He was killed by security forces in Soweto at the age of 21.
Overview
Born in Johannesburg, Kriel grew up in the township of Soweto during the height of institutionalized racial segregation in South Africa. In the early 1980s he became involved with various anti‑apartheid organisations, including the United Democratic Front (UDF) and the African National Congress (ANC) underground structures. Kriel was active in organising protests, student boycotts, and community mobilisation against the apartheid government’s policies.
On 19 July 1987, Kriel was shot dead by South African security police while attempting to flee a police raid on his home. His death drew widespread condemnation and became a rallying point for anti‑apartheid activists. Posthumously, he has been commemorated through memorials, streets named after him, and scholarly references to his role in the struggle.
