Asarlık Hills

Asarlık Hills (Turkish: Asarlık Tepeler) are a group of hills located in the Nallıhan district of Ankara Province, central Turkey. The hills lie approximately 24 km (15 mi) north‑west of the district centre, within the boundaries of the villages of Danişment and Uzunöz (also referenced as Danışment and Oklalar). Their geographic coordinates are 40°19′02″ N 31°24′50″ E.

Geography

The protected area of the Asarlık Hills covers about 52.4 hectares (129 acres). The terrain is characterized by a series of low ridges and valleys that form a typical cuesta landscape—gentle slopes on one side and steeper scarps on the opposite side—resulting from differential erosion of alternating layers of clay with varying resistance.

Natural‑monument status

The hills were officially designated as a Nature Monument (Turkish: Tabiat Anıtı) by the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. This status recognizes the site’s geological significance and affords it legal protection aimed at conserving its natural features and preventing unsuitable development.

Geology and geomorphology

Asarlık Hills exemplify rare instances of cuesta morphology in the region. The hills are composed mainly of sedimentary clay strata that have been sculpted by weathering and erosion processes. The juxtaposition of more resistant and less resistant layers creates the characteristic asymmetrical slopes, making the area valuable for educational and scientific studies in stratigraphy and geomorphology.

Biodiversity

Although the flora of the hills is described as relatively modest due to the limited size of the habitat, surveys have recorded 141 plant taxa belonging to 37 families. The vegetation reflects the dry, continental climate of central Anatolia and includes species adapted to the thin, clayey soils of the hills.

Access and tourism

The site is accessible via local roads connecting Nallıhan with the surrounding villages. It is a destination for nature walks, geological field trips, and modest eco‑tourism, with marked trails that pass through forested sections, rocky outcrops, and nearby water bodies such as Bozyaka Pond. Visitors are encouraged to respect the protected status of the area and adhere to guidelines set by the governing environmental authorities.
