Arthur Claude Ruge (June 30 1921 – February 2 2000) was an American civil engineer, professor, and inventor best known for developing the modern strain gauge, a device that measures deformation (strain) in structural materials. His work laid foundational advances in experimental mechanics and earthquake engineering.
Early life and education
- Born in Detroit, Michigan, United States.
- Earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1943.
- Completed a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1949, where his doctoral research focused on dynamic response of structures.
Academic and professional career
- Joined the faculty of MIT’s Department of Civil Engineering in 1949, eventually becoming a full professor.
- Served as Director of the Center for Earthquake Engineering at MIT, where he directed research on structural response to seismic loading.

Invention of the strain gauge
- In 1938, while a graduate student at MIT, Ruge created a compact, electrically resistive strain gauge based on a fine wire bonded to a flexible backing.
- The device allowed accurate, real‑time measurement of strain in structural components, facilitating the quantitative study of stress and deformation.
- Ruge’s design, often referred to as the “Ruge strain gauge,” was independently developed around the same time by Edward E. Simmons; together they are credited with the invention of the modern strain gauge.
