Art Van Damme

Definition
Art Van Damme (December 12, 1930 – December 30, 2007) was a Belgian jazz accordionist renowned for pioneering the use of the accordion as a lead instrument in modern jazz ensembles.

Overview
Born in Antwerp, Belgium, Van Damme began his musical career in the 1950s, initially performing with local dance bands before turning toward bebop and modern jazz. He relocated to the United States in the early 1960s, where he recorded extensively for labels such as Atlantic, Prestige, and Verve. Over his career he released more than 30 albums as a leader and performed with notable jazz figures including Charlie Parker, Stan Getz, and Chet Baker. Van Damme’s recordings—most famously The Art of the Accordion (1961) and Accordion Dreams (1972)—helped legitimize the accordion within the jazz idiom, an instrument traditionally associated with folk and popular music. He remained active as a performer and educator until his death in 2007.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Art” is commonly a diminutive of “Arthur,” though public records list him simply as Art Van Damme. The surname “Van Damme” is of Dutch‑Flemish origin, meaning “from Damme,” a town in the West Flanders region of Belgium. The construction follows a typical Flemish locational naming pattern.

  • Instrumental Technique: Van Damme employed a chromatic button accordion equipped with a custom‑tuned reed system, allowing rapid bebop articulation and extended harmonic possibilities.
  • Musical Style: His playing blended bebop vocabulary, cool‑jazz phrasing, and occasional European classical influences. He was noted for fluid improvisation, nuanced dynamics, and the ability to sustain melodic lines comparable to horn players.
  • Contribution to Jazz: By demonstrating the accordion’s suitability for complex jazz improvisation, he broadened the instrument’s repertoire and inspired subsequent jazz accordionists such as Richard Galliano and Mario Dozzi.
  • Discography Highlights: The Art of the Accordion (1961), Jazz Accordian (1964), Music for a While (1973), Art Van Damme Live in Paris (1995).
