Aromas is an unincorporated community and census‑designated place (CDP) located in the state of California, United States. The community straddles the border between Monterey County and San Benito County, with the majority of its area situated in Monterey County.
Geography
Aromas lies in the Salinas Valley at an elevation of approximately 236 feet (72 m) above sea level. It is positioned near the junction of State Route 156 and State Route 25, providing road connections to the nearby cities of Salinas, Monterey, and Hollister. The CDP encompasses a total area of roughly 2.0 square miles (5.2 km²), all of which is land.
History
The name “Aromas” is derived from the Spanish word for “aromas” or “fragrances,” reflecting the scent of the surrounding agricultural fields, particularly the region’s citrus and avocado orchards. The community developed in the early 20th century as a farming settlement. A post office was established in 1909, marking the formal recognition of the locality.
Demographics
According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Aromas was recorded as 2,555 in the 2020 census. The community exhibits a diverse demographic composition, with a significant proportion of residents identifying as Hispanic or Latino. The population density is approximately 1,278 persons per square mile (493 persons per km²).
Economy
Aromas’ economy is primarily agricultural, with surrounding farms producing a variety of crops, including grapes, strawberries, and tree fruits. Local businesses consist of retail establishments, service providers, and small-scale manufacturing that support the agricultural sector.
