Army Group Don

Definition
Army Group Don (German: Heeresgruppe Don) was a short‑lived German military formation of the Wehrmacht during World War II, created in February 1943 to coordinate Axis forces on the lower Don River sector of the Eastern Front following the collapse of the 6th Army at Stalingrad.

Overview

  • Formation and Purpose: Established on 14 February 1943 under the command of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein, Army Group Don was intended to stabilize the front line, organize a defensive withdrawal, and attempt a relief operation for the encircled 6th Army in Stalingrad (Operation Winter Storm).
  • Composition: The group comprised the remnants of the 6th Army, the 4th Panzer Army, the Italian 8th Army, and various auxiliary units, totaling roughly 200,000–250,000 men at its peak.
  • Operational History: Army Group Don conducted the failed relief attempt for Stalingrad in late January–early February 1943. After the surrender of the 6th Army on 2 February, the formation’s role shifted to conducting a strategic retreat to the Mius River line and establishing a new defensive front. On 17 April 1943, the group was dissolved and its components reassigned to Army Group South (later renamed Army Group A).
  • Command Structure: Manstein served as commander, with General der Panzertruppe Georg-Hans Reinhardt as chief of staff. The headquarters were located near the city of Kalach on the Don River.
  • Significance: Although operational for only a few months, Army Group Don illustrates the Wehrmacht’s reactive restructuring after catastrophic losses at Stalingrad and represents one of the final large-scale German attempts to maintain a cohesive front in southern Russia.

Etymology/Origin
The name derives from the Don River (Russian: Don), a major waterway flowing through the southern Soviet Union. German military practice often designated army groups after prominent geographical features within their area of operations; thus, “Don” indicates the sector of the Eastern Front that the formation was tasked to defend and manage.

Characteristics

  • Temporal Scope: 14 February 1943 – 17 April 1943.
  • Geographical Area: Lower Don River basin, including towns such as Kalach, Voronezh, and the approaches to Stalingrad.
  • Force Composition: Mixed infantry, panzer, motorized, and allied (Italian) units, reflecting a multinational Axis effort in the region.
  • Operational Role: Primarily defensive, with a limited offensive component aimed at relieving Stalingrad; later focused on organized retreat and consolidation.
  • Outcome: The group failed to achieve its primary objective of saving the 6th Army and was subsequently disbanded, its assets incorporated into other army groups.
