Definition
Armin Maiwald (born 10 February 1940) is a German television presenter, journalist, and author, best known as a co‑creator, writer and on‑screen host of the long‑running children’s educational programme Die Sendung mit der Maus (“The Show with the Mouse”).
Overview
Maiwald was born in Wuppertal, Germany. After completing a vocational training as a carpenter, he pursued studies in journalism and entered the broadcasting field with Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) in the 1960s. In 1971 he, together with producer Christoph Biemann and editor‑producer Wolfgang Reinhardt, developed Die Sendung mit der Maus. The programme combined animated mouse cartoons with short documentary‑style “Maus” segments that explain technical, scientific and everyday phenomena in an accessible manner.
Maiwald wrote, narrated and occasionally appeared on‑camera in many of these explanatory segments, becoming a recognizable figure for several generations of German viewers. Over the decades he has authored numerous books that expand on the subjects covered in the television series, and he has continued to contribute to related WDR productions.
His contributions to media and education have been recognized with several awards, including the German Television Prize (Deutscher Fernsehpreis) and, in 2005, the Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz). He retired from regular on‑screen duties in the early 2010s but remains involved in special projects and the programme’s legacy.
