The municipality lies in the southern part of Sancti Spíritus province, bordering the municipalities of Cabaiguán to the north, Ciego de Ávila Province to the east, and the Caribbean Sea to the south. The terrain is characterized by low-lying plains and a coastal strip, with the Arenal River (Río Arenal) flowing through the area.

History
The settlement that would become Arenal del Sur originated in the late 19th century as a modest agricultural community. It was formally established as a municipality in the early 20th century, following administrative reforms that organized Cuba’s provincial subdivisions.
Etymology
The name “Arenal del Sur” derives from Spanish: “arenal” meaning “sandy place” or “sandbank,” and “del Sur” meaning “of the South.” The designation likely references the municipality’s location in the southern coastal region of the province.
Demographics
The population is predominantly of Cuban descent, with Spanish, African, and indigenous ancestry reflected in the cultural composition. Spanish is the official language, and the predominant religion is Roman Catholicism, although a variety of other faiths are practiced.
Infrastructure
Transportation within the municipality is facilitated by a network of provincial roads connecting Arenal del Sur to neighboring towns and to the provincial capital, Sancti Spíritus. Basic public services, including primary and secondary education, health clinics, and municipal administration, are concentrated in the municipal seat.
