Area code 501

Definition
Area code 501 is a telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) that serves central Arkansas, United States, including the state capital, Little Rock, and surrounding communities.

Overview
The code was assigned in 1947 as one of the original 86 area codes established for the NANP. At inception, 501 covered the entire state of Arkansas. In response to increasing demand for telephone numbers, the original coverage was reduced through two geographic splits:

  • 1997 split – Area code 870 was created for most of Arkansas, while 501 was retained for the central portion of the state.
  • 2002 split – Area code 479 was introduced for the northwestern region (including Fort Smith and Fayetteville), leaving 501 covering the central metropolitan area centered on Little Rock.

Since the 2002 split, area code 501 has not been overlaid with an additional code; new telephone numbers within its service area continue to use the 501 prefix.

Etymology/Origin
The numeric designation “501” does not derive from a linguistic source but follows the NANP’s systematic allocation of three‑digit codes. In the original plan, the first digit indicated the geographical region of the United States, with the “5” series generally assigned to the central part of the country. The subsequent digits “01” were allocated sequentially within that block.

Characteristics

  • Geographic coverage: Central Arkansas, principally the Little Rock metropolitan area, as well as surrounding counties such as Pulaski, Saline, Faulkner, Perry, Conway, and parts of White and Lonoke counties.
  • Major municipalities: Little Rock (state capital), North Little Rock, Conway, Perryville, Cabot, and others.
  • Service provider landscape: The area is served by multiple incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) and competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), offering landline, mobile, and VoIP services under the 501 prefix.
  • Numbering format: Telephone numbers in the region follow the standard NANP format NPA‑NXX‑XXXX, where NPA is 501 and NXX is the central office code.
  • Regulatory authority: The Arkansas Public Service Commission, in coordination with the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA), oversees the allocation and management of the 501 code.
