Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? (Hong Kong game show) is a Hong Kong adaptation of the American game show of the same name. The show tests the general knowledge of adult contestants based on elementary school curriculum.
Format:
The game features an adult contestant who answers questions taken directly from Hong Kong primary school textbooks, covering subjects such as Mathematics, Science, History, and Geography. The contestant chooses a subject and grade level (Primary 1 through Primary 5) for each question. As the contestant progresses, the potential prize money increases.
The contestant has several "cheats" available to them, representing the assistance of fifth-grade students:
- Peek: The contestant can see the fifth-grader's answer but must still choose to answer themselves or not.
- Copy: The contestant must submit the fifth-grader's answer as their own.
- Save: If the contestant answers incorrectly, the fifth-grader's correct answer saves them, and they move on to the next question with the prize level intact.
These "cheats" can be used strategically throughout the game. If the contestant answers a question incorrectly without using a "save," they "drop out" and forfeit all winnings.
Goal:
The ultimate goal of the contestant is to correctly answer all eleven questions. The first ten questions are linked to specific subjects and grade levels. The final question, referred to as the "$HKD 1,000,000 Question," requires the contestant to answer a question from a subject of their choice without any assistance from the fifth-graders. Successfully answering this question wins the top prize of HKD 1,000,000.
Broadcast:
The Hong Kong version of "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?" was broadcast on Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB).
