Aquila Berlas Kiani (1921–2012) was a Pakistani sociologist, academic, and social researcher. She is recognized for her pioneering contributions to the field of sociology and rural development in Pakistan, as well as her advocacy for women's education.
Kiani was born in Meerut, British India, and pursued an extensive international education. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Agra University, followed by a degree from the London School of Economics. She later earned a Master’s degree from Columbia University and a PhD from Florida State University.
In her professional career, Kiani held several significant academic and administrative positions. She served as a Professor and the Head of the Department of Sociology at the University of Karachi, where she helped establish the sociological curriculum and research standards. Beyond academia, she was heavily involved in social work and rural development, notably serving as a faculty member at the Pakistan Academy for Rural Development (PARD).
Kiani was a prominent figure in civil society, serving as the President of the Pakistan Federation of University Women. Her research and publications focused on topics such as social change, rural community structures, and the status of women in Pakistani society. Her work often emphasized the importance of integrating social science research into public policy and community development programs.
In her later life, Kiani moved to Canada, settling in Vancouver, British Columbia. She remained active in community service and academic circles until her death in 2012.
