Apsley Falls is a waterfall located on the Apsley River within the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park in north‑eastern New South Wales, Australia. The falls are situated approximately 30 km east of the town of Walcha and near the small locality of Apsley.
Geography and hydrology
The waterfall forms where the Apsley River plunges over a basalt cliff, creating a series of cascades that together have a total drop of roughly 85 m (280 ft). The surrounding gorge, often referred to as the Apsley Gorge, is characterized by steep sandstone walls and dense eucalypt forest. The river flows from the Great Dividing Range and eventually joins the Macleay River system.
Geology
The falls expose layers of Triassic basalt overlying older sedimentary rock, a feature that illustrates the region’s volcanic history. The basaltic cap creates a hard, resistant lip over which the river water descends, while erosion of the underlying sedimentary strata has formed the narrow gorge.
Ecology
The area surrounding Apsley Falls supports a diversity of flora and fauna typical of the New England Tablelands bioregion. Notable vegetation includes various species of eucalyptus, tea‑tree (Leptospermum spp.), and native shrubs. The gorge provides habitat for bird species such as the pied currawong (Strepera graculina) and the superb lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae).
Access and recreation
Apsley Falls is accessible via a sealed road that branches off the Oxley Highway. A short walking track leads from a parking area to viewing platforms that overlook the waterfall and the gorge. The site is popular for day‑trippers, photographers, and hikers. Facilities are minimal; visitors are advised to bring water, appropriate footwear, and to observe any fire bans in effect.
Cultural significance
The land surrounding the falls is traditionally owned by the Ngunnawal and other Aboriginal groups, who have historical connections to the river and surrounding landscape. Contemporary management of the park incorporates consultation with Indigenous custodians regarding cultural heritage.
Management
The falls and surrounding environment are managed by the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) as part of the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. Conservation measures focus on protecting water quality, preserving native vegetation, and mitigating the impacts of tourism.
