Appa (Chinese: 阿柏; pinyin: Ā Bǎi) is a fictional character in the Nickelodeon animated television series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–2008) and in the 2010 film The Last Airbender, as well as the 2024 Netflix live-action adaptation. Appa is a sky bison—a large, six-legged mammal-like creature capable of natural flight—and serves as the animal spirit guide and primary mode of transportation for the protagonist, Aang. The character is voiced (through vocal effects) by Dee Bradley Baker in the animated series, film, and video games, with Matthew Yang King providing additional vocal effects for the 2024 Netflix series.
Creation and Conception
The show's creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, designed Appa as a cross between a buffalo and a manatee. His six-legged design was directly inspired by the Catbus from Hayao Miyazaki's My Neighbor Totoro. Early concepts depicted Aang shepherding a herd of flying bison, but this was scaled down to a single companion for practicality. The arrow-shaped markings on Appa's back inspired the tattoos worn by Air Nomad masters of airbending in the series.
In-Universe Description
Appa is a male sky bison covered in thick white fur with a large brown arrow marking on his back. He has six legs, a broad tail used to steer through air currents, and flies through airbending. Like all animals in the Avatar universe, Appa does not speak, though he demonstrates high intelligence and appears to understand human speech. His nickname is "Sheddy" (given by the character Toph), referencing the thick fur he sheds at the end of winter.
Personality
Appa is generally placid and loyal but becomes temperamental toward perceived threats to himself or his friends. He fears fire and suffers from claustrophobia in enclosed underground spaces. He has a strong bond with Aang and a special friendship with Momo, a winged lemur. Appa also shows particular affection toward Zuko after Zuko rescues him from captivity beneath Lake Laogai.
Role in the Series
It is tradition among the Air Nomads that each young airbender receives a sky bison calf as a lifelong animal companion upon coming of age. Aang met Appa as a calf at the Southern Air Temple, offering him an apple as a sign of friendship—which also inspired Appa's name (from the word "apple"). Aang and Appa were frozen together in an iceberg for 100 years and were discovered by Katara and Sokka in the series premiere.
Throughout the series, Appa serves as the group's main form of transportation and occasionally assists in battle. A notable storyline occurs in Season 2 when Appa is captured by Sandbenders and becomes lost for several episodes ("The Library," "Appa's Lost Days," "Lake Laogai"). The episode "Appa's Lost Days" won a Genesis Award for its depiction of animal cruelty.

Appa appears in the 2010 live-action film The Last Airbender, rendered in CGI by Industrial Light & Magic, with visual-effects supervisor Pablo Helman citing elephant locomotion as reference for the six-legged creature. The character also appears in the 2024 Netflix live-action series. Appa has featured in multiple video games (Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Burning Earth, Into the Inferno) and in a standalone Plug It In & Play TV Game titled "Appa Air Attack."
Reception and Legacy
Appa is widely regarded as a fan-favorite character. Critics have praised his "lovingly sketched personality" and noted his growth throughout the series. The CGI depiction in the 2010 film received largely negative reviews, with critics citing the "uncanny valley" effect of the design. In a cultural reference, the Star Wars: The Clone Wars character Commander Appo bears a white arrow on his helmet as a homage to Appa, reflecting the influence of Avatar creators (Dave Filoni worked on the first season of Avatar, and Dee Bradley Baker also voiced clone troopers in The Clone Wars).
