Description
Apostichopus japonicus is a marine holothurian characterized by an elongated, cylindrical body that can reach lengths of 30–45 cm when fully extended. The dorsal surface bears a series of tube feet and papillae, while the ventral side features a continuous row of tube feet forming the locomotor apparatus. The skin is typically a mottled brown to reddish‑brown hue, providing camouflage on the seabed. The species possesses a C‑shaped respiratory tree and a well‑developed calcareous ossicles embedded in the body wall, which are diagnostic in microscopic examination.

Distribution and habitat
A. japonicus is native to the temperate coastal waters of the Northwest Pacific, including the seas surrounding Japan, Korea, China, and the Russian Far East. It inhabits subtidal zones, typically at depths ranging from 5 m to 200 m, favoring soft substrates such as sand, mud, or mixed sediments where it can burrow partially or fully.

Ecology
The species is a detritivore, ingesting organic particles, microorganisms, and sediment. By processing large volumes of seabed material, it contributes to nutrient recycling and bioturbation, influencing sediment structure and oxygenation. Predators include fish (e.g., flatfish, cod), crustaceans, and some cephalopods.

Reproduction and life cycle
Apostichopus japonicus exhibits seasonal spawning, primarily in late winter to early spring. Gonadal development is triggered by temperature and photoperiod cues. Fertilization is external; eggs develop into planktonic larvae (auricularia) that undergo several metamorphic stages before settling as juvenile sea cucumbers. The species can reach sexual maturity at 2–3 years, with individuals living up to 5–6 years in the wild.

Economic importance
A. japonicus is one of the most commercially harvested sea cucumber species in East Asia. The harvested body wall is valued for its culinary uses, particularly in traditional Chinese cuisine, and for purported health benefits. Fisheries management in Japan, Korea, and China includes seasonal closures, size limits, and quota systems to mitigate overexploitation.

Conservation status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has not assessed Apostichopus japonicus separately; however, regional assessments have highlighted concerns over declining populations in heavily fished areas. Sustainable harvesting practices and aquaculture initiatives are being developed to alleviate pressure on wild stocks.
