Apatura laverna

Apatura laverna is a species of butterfly in the family Nymphalidae, belonging to the subfamily Apaturinae (commonly referred to as the “emperors” group). It is endemic to China and inhabits mountainous regions of the Palearctic zone.

  • Family: Nymphalidae
  • Subfamily: Apaturinae
  • Genus: Apatura
  • Species: A. laverna

Subspecies

  • A. l. laverna – reported from Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces.
  • A. l. yunlingensis Yoshino, 1999 – recorded from northern Yunnan.

Description

The adult butterfly has a deep ochreous‑brown ground colour on the wings, with blackish markings reminiscent of those in Apatura ilia. The forewing exhibits a distinctly angulate distal margin below the apex, which is more deeply incurved than in related species. The hindwing lacks the rounded spots typical of some Apatura species; instead, a narrow blackish band near the outer margin is bordered by a row of whitish spots. The female of the species has not been formally described.

Distribution and Habitat

Apatura laverna is confined to western China, with confirmed localities including Pu‑tsu‑fong, Wa‑ssukow, and Mount Omei (Emei Shan). Specimens have been collected at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 3,000 m, primarily during June and July.

Biology

Larval host plants are members of the Salicaceae family, notably willow (Salix spp.) and poplar (Populus spp.). The species is considered a typical forest butterfly, and its life cycle follows the usual Lepidopteran pattern of egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Detailed studies on its ecology, population status, and conservation needs are limited.
