Antonín Panenka (born 2 May 1948) is a Czech former professional footballer who played as an attacking midfielder. He is most widely recognized for popularising the chipped penalty kick, known colloquially as the “Panenka,” which he executed during the final of the 1976 UEFA European Championship.
Early life and education
Panenka was born in Prague, then part of Czechoslovakia. Details of his early education and youth football development are documented in Czech sports archives; he began his football training with local clubs before joining the youth system of Bohemians Prague.
Club career
- Bohemians Prague (1966–1979) – Panenka made his senior debut with Bohemians Prague, where he became a key player and contributed to the club’s Czechoslovak First League title in 1978.
- Rapid Wien (1979–1981) – He transferred to Austrian side Rapid Wien, appearing in the Austrian Bundesliga and participating in European competitions.
- Subsequent clubs – After leaving Rapid Wien, Panenka had stints with SC Wacker Vienna and returned briefly to Czechoslovak football before retiring in the mid‑1980s.
International career
Panenka earned 49 caps for the Czechoslovakia national team, scoring 9 goals. He was a member of the squad that won the 1976 UEFA European Championship. In the final against West Germany, after a 2–2 draw, Panenka scored the winning penalty by delicately chipping the ball down the centre of the goal while the goalkeeper dived to one side. This technique has since been named after him.
Style of play
Renowned for his technical skill, vision, and composure under pressure, Panenka operated primarily as an attacking midfielder. He was noted for his passing range, set‑piece execution, and strategic intelligence on the field.
Legacy
The “Panenka” penalty— a softly lofted chip down the middle of the goal during a penalty kick—has become a celebrated, though risky, method employed by players worldwide. The term appears in coaching manuals, sports journalism, and football analytics as a distinct tactical maneuver. Panenka’s influence extends beyond his playing career; he has worked as a football commentator and occasional coach within the Czech Republic.
