Anthroleucosomatidae is a family of millipedes belonging to the order Chordeumatida. Within the taxonomic hierarchy, it is placed in the class Diplopoda and the suborder Craspedosomatidea. Members of this family are part of the diverse group of "silk-producing" millipedes, characterized by the presence of spinnerets on the posterior segment of the body.

Taxonomy and Diversity

The family Anthroleucosomatidae was established to classify several genera of millipedes that share distinct morphological characteristics, particularly regarding the structure of the gonopods (modified legs used for mating in males). The family includes numerous genera, such as Anthroleucosoma, Bulgarosoma, Caucasosoma, and Dacosoma. Taxonomists continually refine the classification of this family as new species are discovered and molecular data becomes available.

Distribution and Habitat

The geographical distribution of Anthroleucosomatidae is primarily restricted to the Western Palearctic region. High concentrations of species are documented in the Balkan Peninsula, the Caucasus Mountains, and Anatolia. These millipedes are typically found in moist environments, inhabiting leaf litter, soil, and decaying wood. A significant number of species within this family are troglomorphic, meaning they have adapted to life in caves and subterranean environments.

Morphology

Anthroleucosomatidae species are generally small to medium-sized millipedes. Like other members of the order Chordeumatida, they typically possess a body composed of 26 to 32 segments, depending on the species and stage of development. Their bodies are often cylindrical or slightly flattened, lacking the hard calcification found in some other millipede orders, which results in a relatively soft exoskeleton. They are characterized by having lateral keels (paranota) on their body segments and a specific arrangement of macrochaetae (large bristles).

Ecology

As detritivores, members of Anthroleucosomatidae play a role in the breakdown of organic matter within their respective ecosystems. They contribute to the cycling of nutrients by consuming decaying plant material and associated fungal growth. In cave ecosystems, where food sources are scarce, they may occupy specialized niches as primary consumers of organic detritus washed into or deposited within the cave systems.
