Anthony Portantino

Anthony Portantino (born November 15, 1960) is an American politician who has served as a member of the California State Assembly representing the 45th Assembly District since 2012. The district encompasses portions of the San Fernando Valley, including the neighborhoods of Encino, Tarzana, and parts of the Santa Monica Mountains. A member of the Democratic Party, Portantino previously served on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, representing the 5th District from 2005 to 2012.

Early life and education
Portantino was born in Los Angeles, California. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and later obtained a Juris Doctor from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law.

Career
Prior to his entry into elected office, Portantino worked as a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles County and later as a private practice attorney. He was first elected to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in 2005, succeeding former Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke. During his tenure on the board, he focused on issues such as public safety, environmental preservation, and infrastructure development.

In 2012, following the resignation of Assemblymember Paul Krekorian, Portantino won a special election to fill the vacant 45th Assembly District seat. He has been re-elected to the Assembly in subsequent regular elections. His legislative priorities have included affordable housing, transportation, education, and environmental protection. Portantino has served on several Assembly committees, including the Committee on Transportation, the Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife, and the Committee on Appropriations.

Political positions
Portantino is generally aligned with the mainstream Democratic caucus in the California legislature. He has advocated for increased funding for public transit projects, expansion of the state's housing supply, and measures to combat climate change.
