Anthony Stewart Head (born February 20, 1954) is an English actor and singer. He is widely recognized for his roles as Rupert Giles in the supernatural drama series Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997–2003), Uther Pendragon in the fantasy series Merlin (2008–2012), and the Prime Minister in the comedy series Little Britain (2003–2006). More recently, he has appeared as Rupert Mannion in the acclaimed Apple TV+ comedy series Ted Lasso (2020–2023).
Early Life and Career Born in Camden Town, London, Head is the son of documentary filmmaker Seafield Head and actress Helen Shingler. His older brother is actor and singer Murray Head. He attended Sunbury Grammar School and later trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).
Head's early career involved extensive work in theatre, appearing in various stage productions. He also gained recognition in the 1980s for his role in a series of popular Nescafé Gold Blend (known as Taster's Choice in the US) television advertisements, alongside Sharon Maughan, playing a romantic couple whose relationship unfolded over several years through coffee. This "Gold Blend couple" campaign made him a household name in the UK.
Breakthrough with Buffy the Vampire Slayer In 1997, Head achieved international fame when he was cast as Rupert Giles, the Watcher and mentor to the titular character in Joss Whedon's critically acclaimed television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. His portrayal of the intellectual, often stern, yet deeply caring librarian and demonologist earned him widespread praise and a strong fan following. He remained a main cast member for six seasons and made guest appearances in the final season.
Post-Buffy Career Following his success in Buffy, Head continued to work prolifically in television, film, and theatre. Notable television roles include:

He played a recurring role as Rupert Mannion, Rebecca Welton's arrogant ex-husband, in Ted Lasso, earning critical acclaim for his performance. Personal Life Anthony Head lives in Somerset, England, with his partner Sarah Fisher. They have two daughters, actresses Daisy Head and Emily Head, both of whom have followed their parents into acting careers.
