Description
Antaeotricha adjunctella is a moth of the family Depressariidae. Adults possess a wingspan that has been reported to be in the range of approximately 20–25 mm. The forewings are primarily white or whitish‑cream, often displaying subtle greyish‑ochreous or fuscous shading and faint transverse markings typical of many Antaeotricha species. The hindwings are generally pale and may exhibit a slight fringe of longer scales along the termen. Detailed morphological characteristics, such as genitalia structure, are used to differentiate this species from closely related congeners, as is standard practice in Lepidoptera taxonomy.
Distribution
The species has been recorded from the Amazon region of Brazil, specifically the state of Amazonas. Additional records from neighboring South American localities have not been widely documented, and its full range may be under‑recorded due to limited sampling.
Habitat
Antaeotricha adjunctella inhabits tropical rainforest environments, where host plants for its larvae are presumed to belong to the family Asteraceae or related families, as is common for many members of the genus. Specific larval host plants for this species have not been definitively identified.
Life Cycle and Ecology
Information on the life history of A. adjunctella is sparse. Like other depressariid moths, it is expected to undergo complete metamorphosis (egg → larva → pupa → adult). Adults are nocturnal and are attracted to light, which facilitates their collection for scientific study.
Taxonomic History
The species was first described by Francis Walker in 1864 under the name Stenoma adjunctella in his work “List of the Specimens of Lepidopterous Insects in the Collection of the British Museum.” Subsequent taxonomic revisions transferred the species to the genus Antaeotricha, reflecting updated understanding of morphological relationships within the family Depressariidae.
