Anseong

Anseong (Korean: 안성시; Hanja: 安城市; RR: Anseong-si) is a city located in the southeastern part of Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. Situated approximately 75 kilometers (47 miles) south of the capital Seoul, Anseong is recognized for its significant role in Korean agriculture, traditional crafts, and historical heritage.

Etymology The name "Anseong" is derived from two Sino-Korean characters: "An" (安), meaning "peace" or "safety," and "Seong" (城), meaning "fortress" or "city." This etymology reflects the city's historical importance as a strategic and secure settlement.

History Anseong boasts a long and layered history, with evidence of human settlement dating back to prehistoric times.

  • Three Kingdoms Period (c. 4th-7th century CE): The area was known as Naehyegun (내혜군) under the Goguryeo Kingdom.
