Ankara Metro

The Ankara Metro (Turkish: Ankara Metrosu) is a rapid transit system serving the capital city of Turkey, Ankara. Operated by the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, the network currently comprises three lines—M1, M2, and M3—covering a total system length of approximately 53 km (33 mi) and serving 57 stations.

History

  • Planning for a subway system in Ankara began in the 1990s, with construction of the first line (M1) commencing in 1992.
  • The M1 line, also known as the Ankaray, opened to the public on 30 August 1996, initially running between Kızılay and Aşıkeş.
  • Subsequent extensions expanded M1 to 18 stations, reaching the Batıkent district in 2011.
  • The M2 line, connecting Kızılay with Koru via the western districts, entered service on 12 February 2014.
  • The M3 line, a branch from the M1 line to the western suburb of Gölbaşı, began operations on 16 February 2020.

Lines and Services

  • M1 (Ankaray): Primarily a light‑metro line, it operates with a headway of 4–6 minutes during peak periods. Trains are driverless, using automatic train control (ATC) technology.
  • M2: Standard heavy‑metro line with conventional rolling stock, providing service at 5‑minute intervals during rush hour.
  • M3: Operates as a short branch of the M1, utilizing the same rolling stock and automation systems.

All lines are gauge‑standard (1,435 mm) and electrified via a 750 V DC third‑rail system. Stations are equipped with accessibility features, including elevators and tactile paving for visually impaired passengers.

Ridership
According to statistics released by the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, the metro system carries roughly 300,000 passengers per weekday (as of 2023), constituting a significant portion of the city's public‑transport modal share.

Future Expansion
Plans approved by the municipality include extensions of the M2 line toward the north‑western districts and a new line designated M4, intended to connect the northeastern suburbs. Implementation timelines are contingent upon funding and detailed engineering studies.
