Angelo Espinosa is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He is a mutant who adopts the codename Skin and possesses the ability to manipulate and extend his own skin, allowing him to stretch, deform, and wrap his body in various ways.
Publication history
Skin first appeared in The Uncanny X‑Men #317 (October 1994) and was created by writer Scott Lobdell and artist Chris Bachalo. The character was introduced as part of a group of young mutants who would later form the team Generation X.
Fictional biography
-
Early life: Angelo Espinosa was born and raised in the barrio of South Central Los Angeles. His father, Eduardo Espinosa, was killed in a drive‑by shooting when Angelo was a child. Exposed to street violence, he joined a local gang and entered a relationship with a fellow gang member named Tores.
-
Mutation and powers: Following a violent shoot‑out, Angelo’s mutant powers manifested, granting him the ability to control up to six feet of excess skin. The powers enable him to stretch his skin like a rubber membrane, create protective shields, and use it as a grappling tool.
-
Generation X: After faking his own death to escape gang life, Angelo was abducted by the techno‑organic alien race known as the Phalanx. He was rescued by the X‑Men and subsequently enrolled at the Massachusetts Academy, the new branch of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. There he joined the founding roster of Generation X, adopting the codename Skin.
-
Later events: During his tenure with Generation X, Skin was mistakenly targeted by the vigilante known as the X‑Cutioner, who believed him responsible for the death of “Angelo Espinosa.” After Generation X disbanded, Skin returned to Los Angeles, worked in a fast‑food restaurant, and maintained a close friendship with teammate Jubilee. He was later captured by the anti‑mutant organization the Church of Humanity and crucified on the lawn of the X‑Men’s mansion, resulting in his death. His body was exhumed and cremated, but he was subsequently revived by an alien techno‑organic virus.
Powers and abilities
Skin’s primary mutation allows him to elongate, expand, and compress his skin at will. He can use the excess skin as a prehensile appendage, a protective covering, or a means of locomotion. The mutation does not grant him enhanced strength, durability, or regenerative abilities beyond the manipulation of his skin.
