Angel Penna Sr.

Angel Penna Sr. (1921 – 1992) was an Argentine‑born thoroughbred horse trainer who achieved prominence in Europe and the United States during the mid‑20th century. Beginning his career in his native Argentina, Penna later established himself in France, where he trained for a number of leading owners and earned victories in major French stakes races. In the 1970s he relocated to the United States, where he continued to train winners of Grade I races for prominent American stables.

Penna was noted for his ability to condition horses for international competition and for his success across a range of distances and surfaces. He trained numerous stakes winners, contributing to the global reputation of Argentine trainers in the thoroughbred racing industry.

Penna’s career was followed by that of his son, Angel Penna Jr., who also became a distinguished trainer.
