Andris Marisovich Liepa (Russian: Андрис Марисович Лиепа; born January 2, 1962, in Moscow, Soviet Union) is a prominent Russian ballet dancer, choreographer, and producer. He is widely recognized for his contributions to classical ballet, both as a leading performer and as a tireless advocate for the preservation and revival of historical ballet productions, particularly those from the Ballets Russes era.
Early Life and Training: Andris Liepa was born into a distinguished ballet family. He is the son of the renowned Latvian ballet dancer Maris Liepa and actress Margarita Zhigunova, and the brother of ballerina Ilze Liepa. He received his formal ballet education at the Moscow Choreographic School (now the Moscow State Academy of Choreography), graduating in 1981.
Performing Career: Upon graduation, Liepa joined the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he quickly established himself as a principal dancer. His repertoire included many of the most iconic male roles in classical ballet, such as Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, Prince Désiré in The Sleeping Beauty, Albrecht in Giselle, Basilio in Don Quixote, and James in La Sylphide. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Liepa gained significant international recognition, performing as a guest artist with prestigious companies worldwide. He notably danced with the Kirov Ballet (now Mariinsky Ballet) in St. Petersburg, and made significant appearances with the American Ballet Theatre in New York and the Paris Opéra Ballet. His powerful stage presence, exceptional technical prowess, and dramatic intensity made him a sought-after performer globally. He was often praised for his artistry and the nobility of his interpretations.
Producing and Revivals: After concluding his active performing career, Liepa transitioned into producing and directing, dedicating himself to the revival of forgotten or rarely performed ballets from the early 20th century. A particular focus has been on reconstructing works originally premiered by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. In 1993, he co-founded the Liepa International Charitable Foundation (later renamed "Maris Liepa International Charitable Foundation" in memory of his father), which has been instrumental in staging numerous historical reconstructions. Key projects include the critically acclaimed revivals of Mikhail Fokine's ballets Scheherazade, The Firebird, and Petrushka, which had not been seen in their original form for decades. These revivals have been presented on major stages globally, including the Mariinsky Theatre, the Bolshoi Theatre, and the Kremlin Palace Theatre. Liepa has often taken an active role in the creative direction, ensuring historical accuracy while breathing new life into these classic works. Beyond revivals, Liepa has also produced and directed numerous ballet gala concerts and festivals, promoting both established and young talent, and celebrating the rich legacy of Russian ballet.
Awards and Recognition: Andris Liepa's extensive contributions to the arts have been widely acknowledged. He was awarded the prestigious title of People's Artist of Russia, one of the highest artistic honors in the country. He has also received numerous other awards and distinctions for his performing and producing work, celebrating his efforts in preserving and developing classical ballet.
Personal Life: Andris Liepa maintains a close connection to his family's artistic legacy. His father, Maris Liepa, remains a legendary figure in Soviet and world ballet, and his sister, Ilze Liepa, is also a celebrated ballerina and actress, continuing the family's profound impact on the performing arts.
