Definition
Andriamanelo (c. 1540 – c. 1575) was a historic monarch of Madagascar, recognized as the first sovereign of the Imerina kingdom in the central highlands.
Overview
According to Malagasy oral tradition and later historiography, Andriamanelo succeeded his father, Andriandravindramanana, and established a dynastic line that would dominate the Imerina region for several centuries. His reign is associated with the consolidation of scattered chiefdoms, the construction of fortified settlements (known as rova), and the introduction of ironworking techniques that enhanced agricultural productivity and warfare capabilities. The period of his rule marks the transition from loosely organized tribal societies to a more centralized political entity in the central plateau of Madagascar.
Etymology/Origin
The name Andriamanelo derives from the Malagasy language, in which Andria is a honorific prefix meaning “prince” or “noble,” and manelo can be interpreted as “the one who is brave” or “the victorious.” Consequently, the name is commonly rendered as “the noble brave one” or “the victorious prince.”
