Andrew John Strauss (born 2 March 1977) is a former English cricketer who played as a right‑handed opening batsman and later served as captain of the England national team. He made his Test debut in 2000 against the West Indies and his One‑Day International debut in 2001. Strauss was appointed England captain in 2006, leading the team to regain the Ashes in 2009. Over his career he scored 5,696 runs in 100 Test matches at an average of 44.34, including 14 centuries. He retired from international cricket in 2012.
After retiring as a player, Strauss held several administrative and coaching positions. He served as England’s chairman of selectors from 2014 to 2021 and was appointed director of cricket for the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 2022. In addition to his cricketing roles, Strauss has worked as a television pundit and commentator.
Strauss was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and moved to England as a child. He was educated at Tonbridge School and later attended Durham University, where he represented the university cricket team. He played domestic cricket for Middlesex County Cricket Club throughout his career, captaining the side from 2001 to 2011.
His contributions to English cricket have been recognised with several honors, including being appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours.
