Early life and Education
Andrew John Gwynne was born on 17 October 1974 in Manchester, England. He attended Egerton Park Primary School and Two Trees High School. He later studied at Tameside College and the North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (now Wrexham Glyndŵr University), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public Policy.Political Career
Gwynne began his political career in local government. He was first elected as a councillor for the Denton West ward on Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council in 1996, serving until 2008. During his time on the council, he held various positions, including executive member for health and social care.He was first elected to the House of Commons in the 2005 general election, representing the constituency of Denton and Reddish. He successfully held his seat in subsequent general elections in 2010, 2015, 2017, and 2019.
Gwynne has held several frontbench and Shadow Cabinet positions under various Labour leaders:
- Shadow Minister for Health: From 2010 to 2011, under Ed Miliband.
- Shadow Minister for Communities and Local Government: From 2011 to 2015, under Ed Miliband.
- Shadow Minister for Public Health: From 2015 to 2016, under Jeremy Corbyn.
- Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government: In 2017, under Jeremy Corbyn.
- Shadow Minister Without Portfolio and Election Coordinator: From 2017 to 2019, under Jeremy Corbyn, playing a significant role in the party's general election campaigns.
- Shadow Minister for Social Care: From 2020 to 2021, under Keir Starmer.
- Shadow Minister for Energy and Climate Change: From 2021 to 2023, under Keir Starmer.
Known for his focus on local issues and a strong commitment to his constituency, Gwynne has also been vocal on national policy, particularly regarding public health, local government funding, and energy policy.
