Andrew John Bolton OBE (born 1966) is a British museum curator. He is the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the department that organizes the museum's annual Costume Institute Gala (commonly known as the Met Gala).
Early life and education
Bolton was born in 1966 in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. He studied anthropology at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, graduating with an undergraduate degree in 1987 and later completing a master's degree. His academic background in anthropology and non-Western art is frequently cited as an influence on his curatorial approach.
Career
Bolton began his museum career at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where he worked for approximately nine years, including as a curatorial assistant in the Far Eastern Department and later as a senior research fellow in contemporary fashion. During this period he also curated exhibitions at the London College of Fashion.
He joined the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2002 as an associate curator and was named curator in 2006. Following the retirement of Harold Koda, Bolton was announced in September 2015 as Koda's successor, and he became Curator in Charge in January 2016. He holds the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge title.
