Anatoly Torkunov

Anatoly Vasilyevich Torkunov (Russian: Анато́лий Васи́льевич Торкуно́в; born August 26, 1950) is a prominent Russian academic, diplomat, and specialist in international relations. He is best known for his long-standing role as the Rector of the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO University), a position he has held since 1992. Torkunov is also a member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and has served in various governmental and advisory capacities related to foreign policy and education.

Early Life and Education

Anatoly Torkunov was born in Moscow, Soviet Union. He pursued his higher education at MGIMO University, graduating in 1972 from the Faculty of International Relations. He specialized in the history of Korea and East Asian international relations. He later completed his Ph.D. in History from MGIMO in 1974.

Academic Career

Torkunov's academic career began at MGIMO, where he rose through the ranks.

  • 1974–1975: Lecturer at the Department of History and Culture of Far Eastern Countries.
  • 1976–1977: Assistant Dean of the Faculty of International Relations.
  • 1977–1983: Dean of the Faculty of International Relations.
  • 1983–1986: First Vice-Rector of MGIMO.
  • 1986–1988: Counsellor at the Soviet Embassy in Washington, D.C., USA, focusing on academic and cultural exchange.
  • 1989–1992: Professor and Head of the Department of Oriental Studies.

In 1992, Anatoly Torkunov was appointed Rector of MGIMO University, succeeding Nikolai Lebedev. Under his leadership, MGIMO has undergone significant modernization and expansion, solidifying its reputation as a leading institution for international relations, diplomacy, and area studies in Russia and globally. He has overseen the introduction of new academic programs, fostered international partnerships, and adapted the university to post-Soviet realities while maintaining its high academic standards.

He was elected a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2003 and a full member (academician) in 2008 in the Department of Global Problems and International Relations.

Diplomatic and Public Service

Beyond his academic role, Torkunov has held several influential positions in Russian public and diplomatic life:

  • 2006–present: Chairman of the Public Council under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation.
  • 2007–2008: President of the Russian Association of International Studies.
  • 2012–present: Co-Chairman of the Russian-Polish Group for Difficult Questions, an initiative aimed at fostering dialogue and understanding between the two nations.
  • He also serves as an expert and advisor to the Russian President, government, and parliament on foreign policy, education, and international security matters.

Torkunov has published extensively on international relations, East Asian history, and Russian foreign policy, with a particular focus on the Korean Peninsula. He is the author or co-author of numerous books, articles, and textbooks.

Anatoly Torkunov has received numerous state awards and honors from Russia and other countries for his contributions to education, science, and international cooperation, including:
